This historical frieze depicts the history of Romania, beginning with the pre-Roman times and ending with the year 1938, covering a span of two millennia. Measuring 30 meters long and 1.20 meters tall, superbly hammered in copper, this selection of the historical events has become a symbol of millennial dimensions.
The beginning of the frieze is Pre-Roman and explores Thracian ancestry of the Dacians (Dacia – old name of Romania; Romania means ‘New Rome’). Through historical figures, monuments and symbols, all authentically reproduced, one can trace this history of the Romanian people from their beginning up to the start of WWII. From the dark days of the Roman Conquest (101 – 105 AD) and the Dark Middle Ages (271 – 1241 AD) to the brave and prosperous undertakings of valiant successors such as Mircea cel Batran (Prince of Wallachia), the Great and Holy Steven, Michael the Brave all the way to King Ferdinand and Queen Marie (1914-1927) and King Carol II (1930-1940), this great nation persevered through the most difficult of circumstances. Victories and triumphs came forth through countless battles against the hoards of barbarian invaders all to protect the integrity of their principalities. This unique frieze also depicts the blossoming of literature, architecture and agriculture during the booming economy and righteous rule of the Romanian leaders. Romanian-Americans are proud to have such a “certificate of ancestry” residing in Cleveland, Ohio, where the first Romanian pioneers settled in the USA to build the first two churches in their new homeland. This graphic history of Romania provides them the lesson of history of their forefathers, their legends and proverbs and, above all, the faith for which many of them have offered the supreme price The frieze arrived in Cleveland during 1939 from the World Fair hosted in New York City, the Romanian frieze along with many other prized pieces of art, artifacts, ethnic garments, and religious antiquity, were gifted to the first Romanian Orthodox church in the United States, St Mary’s Cathedral. For these reasons and much more, the complex of St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Culture and Romanian Ethnic Art Museum will always be a memorable Center of Romanian spirituality and culture in America. The frieze of the history of the Romanian Nation teaches and inspires, immortalizes and actualizes a past, which is only fulfilled in the achievements of the united present and future generations of Romanian descendents. |
